Essential Info About Choquequirao.

What is Choquequirao?

The Inca Archaeological site of Choquequirao

Choquequirao is a spectacular Inca site located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Situated at an altitude of around 3,050 metres, it has earned the nickname of ‘Sister to Machu Picchu’ due to its similarity to that iconic destination.

Choquequirao was founded as part of a network of sites constructed by the Inca Empire during their reign in South America – for many centuries it remained mysteriously lost in time until its rediscovery by archaeologists in 1836. Although much smaller than Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is no less impressive – featuring beautiful terraces and curved stone structures carefully crafted from white granite rock.

Getting to Choquequirao requires determination and endurance – firstly trekkers have to ascend through the Vilcabamba mountain range before making their way across rivers and valleys over three days hike. However those who manage this incredible feat are rewarded with some astounding sights along the way; including snow-peaked mountains, lush jungle vegetation and a vast array of wildlife inhabiting this remote region of Peru.

Visiting Choquequirao is an amazing experience which combines stunning landscapes with historical significance – something which makes this astonishing site truly one-of-a-kind!
