What is Choquequirao?
CHOQUEQUIRAO is a wonderful Inca archaeological site equal or provably better than Machu Picchu; but it is less known and more unexplored; it is located in the region of Vilcabamba at approximately 100km beyond the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. It is low less crowded and is considered the sacred sister of Machu Picchu to where you can arrive as a backpacker, with long independent walks and camping on the route. Choquequirao is therefore a great Inca archaeological complex with religious buildings dedicated to the Mother Nature, astronomical observatories and agriculture terraces; the testimony of the Incas conquering the heights of the mountains.

    Avoiding Altitude Sickness

We highly recommended that you spend at least two days in Cusco acclimatizing before beginning your Choquequirao Trek. We’ll assist you to organize hotels and excursions in Cusco for these all important acclimatization days. Cusco is unfortunately relatively high at 3,400m / 11,150ft so you will undoubtedly start feeling the altitude as soon as you arrive. Try not to exert yourself whilst in Cusco and drink lots of water. You can read more about acclimatisation and altitude sickness here.
