Everything You Need to Know Before Your Choquequirao Trek 4 Days
A successful trek to Choquequirao begins long before you reach the trailhead. From acclimatizing in Cusco to preparing the right equipment, understanding the weather, and knowing what to expect on the trail, a little preparation will help you enjoy every moment of this extraordinary Andean adventure.
Our team is here to make your experience as safe, comfortable, and memorable as possible.
Welcome to Cusco – Prepare for Your Adventure
Welcome to Cusco, the historic heart of the Inca Empire and the gateway to your Choquequirao adventure.
We recommend arriving at least two days before your trek. This gives your body valuable time to adjust to the altitude while allowing you to explore Cusco, organize your personal equipment, and prepare for the journey ahead.
Take these first days slowly. Enjoy the city’s beautiful streets, discover its fascinating history, drink plenty of water, and get a good night’s sleep.
Your Choquequirao adventure doesn’t begin when you reach the trailhead—it begins the moment you arrive in the Andes.
Pre-Trek Briefing – Get Ready for the Trail
The evening before departure, we will meet for a pre-trek briefing, normally at 6:00 PM at our office.
During the briefing, your guide will explain the itinerary, hiking conditions, weather, meals, luggage arrangements, safety recommendations, and what to expect each day.
This is also the perfect opportunity to ask questions, check your equipment, and meet the team that will accompany you.
Our goal is simple: you should begin your trek feeling prepared, informed, and confident.
Luggage Storage – Travel Light
You don’t need to carry all your belongings on the trail.
Your main luggage can be safely stored in Cusco, either at our office or according to the arrangements made with your hotel.
Before departure, we provide a duffel bag for the trek, which can be transported by our pack horses according to the agreed luggage allowance.
You only need to carry your daypack with the items you’ll need during the day’s hike.
Travel lighter. Walk easier. Enjoy the Andes more.
Altitude & Acclimatization
Altitude is an important consideration on the Choquequirao route because the trail passes through dramatically different elevations and climates.
For this reason, we strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek.
During your acclimatization days:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Avoid excessive alcohol.
- Get enough sleep.
- Eat light, nutritious meals.
- Avoid strenuous exercise during your first day.
- Listen to your body.
- Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell.
The mountains reward patience. Give your body time to adjust, and you’ll be better prepared to enjoy the journey.
Important: Exact altitude figures can vary depending on the route and itinerary. We recommend confirming the current route elevations with our team before departure.
Packing for the Choquequirao Trek
Packing smart can make a big difference on a challenging trek.
Your main trekking luggage will be transported by pack horses, while you carry a daypack with the essentials you need during the hike.
We recommend bringing:

Our professional guides are trained to respond to common trekking emergencies and carry a first-aid kit and emergency oxygen.
If a traveler becomes unable to continue safely, our team will evaluate the situation and coordinate appropriate assistance according to local conditions.
Because Choquequirao is a remote mountain destination, emergency evacuation and medical assistance may take time. Your guide will always prioritize your safety and coordinate with local resources when necessary.
For this reason, appropriate travel insurance and trekking coverage are strongly recommended.
Travel Insurance – Protect Your Adventure
Travel insurance is an important part of preparing for any remote trekking adventure.
We recommend purchasing a policy that covers:
- Trekking activities
- Emergency medical treatment
- Emergency evacuation
- Trip interruption
- Trip cancellation
- Lost or delayed luggage
Before traveling, carefully check the terms and exclusions of your policy to make sure the Choquequirao Trek is covered.

- Never leave waste on the trail
- Stay on established paths

- Follow the instructions of your guide
Our trekking team works to minimize waste and maintain clean camps and trails according to local operating conditions.
Leave only footprints. Take only memories.
Accommodation & Trekking Comfort
The Choquequirao route is a remote mountain adventure, so accommodation is intentionally simple and authentic.
Depending on the confirmed itinerary and availability, you will stay in local mountain campsites or basic mountain lodges along the route.
These are not luxury accommodations—but they offer something much more valuable: proximity to nature, peaceful surroundings, and the opportunity to experience the Andes away from the crowds.
After a long day on the trail, there’s nothing quite like enjoying a warm meal, looking across the mountains, and watching the stars appear above the canyon.
Please confirm the exact accommodation arrangement with our team before departure, as availability can vary.

Travel Information – Choquequirao Trek 4 Days
The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is more than a hike to an archaeological site. It is a journey deep into the Peruvian Andes, where dramatic mountain landscapes, ancient Inca architecture, remote communities, and extraordinary biodiversity come together.
Before beginning your adventure, discover what makes Choquequirao so special, understand the physical challenge of the route, and learn about the remarkable landscapes and wildlife you may encounter along the way.
About Choquequirao – Peru’s Hidden Inca Treasure
Hidden high in the Andes above the Apurímac River Canyon, Choquequirao is one of Peru’s most remarkable archaeological destinations.
Surrounded by steep mountains, deep valleys, and spectacular natural scenery, the archaeological complex offers travelers a rare opportunity to experience an important Inca site in a remote and peaceful setting.
Choquequirao is often compared with Machu Picchu because of its impressive architecture and mountain setting, but the experience is very different. Reaching Choquequirao requires a demanding multi-day trek, which means far fewer visitors make the journey.
The reward is an extraordinary combination of archaeology and nature: ancient terraces, plazas, ceremonial spaces, stone structures, and spectacular views extending across the Apurímac landscape.
This is Peru beyond the ordinary—and that’s what makes Choquequirao unforgettable.
The History of Choquequirao
Choquequirao is an impressive Inca archaeological complex dating primarily to the 15th and 16th centuries.
Its exact original purpose is still discussed by researchers, but archaeological evidence suggests that the site had important ceremonial, administrative, agricultural, and residential functions within the Inca world.
The complex includes plazas, temples, residential areas, agricultural terraces, water systems, and the extraordinary terraces decorated with white stone llama figures.
After the Spanish conquest, Choquequirao was gradually abandoned and became increasingly hidden by vegetation and the surrounding mountains.
Centuries later, explorers, researchers, archaeologists, and local communities helped bring the site back into wider attention.
Today, Choquequirao remains one of the most fascinating archaeological destinations in Peru—and its remote location is an important part of its magic.
Why is Choquequirao called the “Sister City of Machu Picchu”?
The nickname reflects similarities between the two sites, including their impressive Inca architecture, terraces, ceremonial spaces, and dramatic mountain settings.
However, Choquequirao is not simply another Machu Picchu.
It offers its own history, architecture, landscapes, and sense of discovery.
Choquequirao Trek 4 Days – Difficulty
The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is a moderate to challenging adventure and should not be underestimated.
The main challenge comes from the dramatic elevation changes rather than simply the maximum altitude. The route includes long descents into the Apurímac Canyon followed by demanding climbs through the mountains.
You can expect:
- Steep ascents and descents
- Uneven mountain trails
- Several hours of hiking each day
- Significant changes in temperature
- Hot conditions in lower canyon areas
- Cooler conditions at higher elevations
- Early morning starts
- Remote sections with limited services
Do I need to be an experienced hiker?
Not necessarily.
You don’t need previous high-altitude trekking experience, but you should have a good level of general fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days.
Regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, and cardiovascular exercise before your trip can help you prepare.
We also strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek.
The effort is worth it
The trail will challenge you—but it also rewards you with something extraordinary.
Every difficult climb brings you closer to an ancient Inca world hidden among the mountains.
The destination is incredible. The journey is unforgettable.
Flora & Fauna Around Choquequirao
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Choquequirao Trek is the incredible diversity of landscapes and ecosystems along the route.
As you descend toward the Apurímac Canyon and climb toward Choquequirao, the environment changes dramatically.
You may encounter:
🦅 Andean Condors
Look toward the skies above the canyon for the possibility of seeing Andean condors soaring on the mountain thermals.
🐦 Hummingbirds & Andean Birds
The vegetation around the trail provides habitat for numerous bird species, including colorful hummingbirds.
🦙 Andean Wildlife
Depending on the season and location, travelers may encounter wildlife such as vizcachas, foxes, and other species adapted to the rugged Andean environment.
🐻 Spectacled Bears
The wider Andean cloud-forest ecosystem provides habitat for the spectacled bear, although sightings are uncommon and never guaranteed.
🌺 Orchids & Native Plants
The changing altitude creates a remarkable variety of vegetation, including orchids, ferns, native grasses, shrubs, and other Andean plants.
🌿 A Changing Ecosystem
One of the great pleasures of this trek is watching the landscape transform as you hike—from dry canyon environments to greener mountain vegetation and higher Andean ecosystems.
Bring your camera, but remember that wildlife sightings are always unpredictable. The mountains reveal their secrets only when they choose to.
Why This Information Matters Before Your Trek
Understanding Choquequirao before you arrive makes the experience even more meaningful.
You won’t simply see ancient stones—you’ll understand the incredible landscape in which the Incas built their settlements.
You won’t simply climb a mountain—you’ll understand why this trek is considered one of Peru’s great adventure experiences.
And when Choquequirao finally appears between the mountains after days of hiking, you’ll appreciate just how extraordinary the journey has been.

Over four days, you will descend deep into the Apurímac Canyon, climb through dramatic Andean landscapes, cross changing ecological zones, and finally reach the magnificent ruins of Choquequirao.
Expect:
- Steep ascents and descents
- Several hours of hiking each day
- Changing temperatures and weather
- Remote mountain landscapes
- Basic mountain accommodation
- Freshly prepared trekking meals
- Horse support for luggage and equipment
- Expert local guidance
- An unforgettable archaeological experience
The trek can be physically demanding, but the rewards are extraordinary.
Every climb brings a new view. Every trail reveals another part of the Andes. And at the end, Choquequirao waits among the mountains.
Why Travelers Choose the Choquequirao Trek 4 Days
Travelers choose this route because it offers something increasingly rare: adventure away from the crowds.
More Time to Enjoy the Journey
Four days allow you to experience the route at a more balanced pace rather than trying to complete the adventure in the shortest possible time.
A Remote Inca Experience
Choquequirao’s remote location makes reaching it part of the adventure. The journey itself becomes one of the highlights of your Peru trip.
Spectacular Landscapes
From the depths of the Apurímac Canyon to high mountain viewpoints, the scenery changes constantly throughout the trek.
History & Culture
Explore an extraordinary Inca archaeological complex while learning about its history, architecture, agriculture, and connection with the surrounding Andes.

The evening before your trek, we normally hold a pre-trek briefing, where your guide will explain the route, logistics, equipment, safety recommendations, and answer your questions.
